The Digital City and Intelligent Buildings
Information technology, IT, will cause a paradigm shift in our society from the art of writing, printing to the art of communication. In the same way as the car highly influenced the physical design of our society IT will higly influence the forming of the global villages.
New services will be designed and implemented in the citizen nets to support the village inhabitants - access to services and facts bases, and possibilities for active participation in the (democratic) decision process. We will study and analyse ongoing efforts in the area.
The building product itself will contain or have attached to it IT-tools which will support it during it's life time. Information handling and communication support will be given for the building inhabitants, for the adminstration of the building and it's operation and maintenence (O&M). The IT support will be in the form of conventional computer systems and sophisticated input/output units as well as in the building and installations embedded computer systems.
We will investigate exisiting and expected infrastructures, systems, and services in the intelligent buildings and digital cities, and how they can be designed, modelled, and implemented.

- Home automation for the elderly and disabled (Wiki)
This form of home automation (called assistive domotics) focuses on making it possible for the elderly and disabled to remain at home and remain safe and comfortable. Home automation is becoming a viable option for the elderly and disabled who would prefer to stay in the comfort of their home rather than move to a healthcare facility. . This field uses much of the same technology and equipment as home automation for security, entertainment, and energy conservation but tailors it towards the elderly and disabled.
- Intelligent home environment
People are living longer and longer. Today, over 40 million EU citizens are over 65 years of age, and by 2050, this figure will have doubled. Many older people would ideally like to remain in their own homes – even if they are frail and regularly need assistance. In the future, automated homes, intelligent environments, modern sensor systems, and information technology can help elderly to live autonomously in their own homes. These systems remind residents to regularly take their medicine, for example, or send out an alert if someone falls. The technology remains discreetly in the background – until it is needed. Past ICESIT Conferences:
Top Gun Rally (TGR) TGR is a 5 days hands-on technical skill development camp that grooms university students with various challenging engineering problems. Students are exposed to new techniques through morning lectures and challenged with development problems in the afternoon. Events are organized similar to a motor rally wherein students are given a roadmap of what to achieve with certain stop points or daily achievement. Students are evaluated and graded each day. The team with highest cumulative score will receive the Top Gun Award. TGR aims to find some of the best engineering students and equip them with the most current state of the practice development methodologies and techniques to become the most capable group of embedded system engineers. Here are some of the previous events:
Thailand Embedded Product Award (TEPA) The Thailand Embedded Product Award aims to select outstanding embedded products developed by Thai companies. The awards will promote excellence in product design and engineering. Product developers who pass the pre-selection stage will be invited to take part in seminars and training events to strenghten their capacity. Awards will be given in three categories: automotive electronics and intelligent transportation system, agritronics and automation, RFID and sensor network. Winners will receive assistance in promoting and marketing their products, for instance, through the TESA catalogue of winning products.
Design Challenge Design Challenge is a contest aimed at teams of undergraduate students which are nominated by universities. The students are given a full semester to work together to solve various embedded engineering problems. For instance, in 2008, the project was to develop a device to analyze the driving behaviour of bus drivers. A pre-competition training workshop is organized to help the students get up to speed on certain essential techniques. Here are some of the previous events:
Hyper Camp Hyper Camp is a summer camp aimed at rising fourth-year undergraduate students. Through a highly selective process, students are deployed at TESA to work on real-world problems set by companies that are TESA industrial members. Small teams are formed for each industry counterpart. Industry counterparts provide periodic guidance and evaluation to the teams, while TESA delivers continuous support to ensure that the learning experience is optimized. Students are encouraged to continue with the assignments as part of their senior projects. Hyper Camp has been succesful in achieving cooperation between academia and industry, allowing for professors and students to work closely with industry leaders and helping companies recruit and pre-train new engineers. Here are some of the previous events:
Project Guidance Project Guidance is a web forum that provides community support to professionals or students, especially those working on senior projects. It is expected that some of the Community Gurus (experts) including your student peers, alumni, teachers, and professionals will participate and contribute in this forum. It is understood that the ideas and techniques shared here are "open source" (free software, free ideas, freedom) to everyone. The web forum is accessible on the TESA website.
SP2-EE (Second Stimulus Package in Electrical and Electronic Industry) Initiated under the second Stimulus Package, the Ministry of Science and Technology will undertake high-priority projects in the next three years, including in electronics. Support will be provided to four groups in the electronic sectors: hard disk drive, IC packaging, Federation of Thai Industries, and electronic design industries. TESA has been appointed to manage the activities under the electronic design industry groups. There will be five main areas of activity: HRD; start up incubation; and promoting the development of the vertical market in automotive electronics, agritronics, energy management and logistics and automation.
There has been a great deal of hype back in 3Q09 regarding the pursuit of SP2-EE budget. Currently, the status is quite bleak since the ministry of science didn't receive a favorable response. The final draw of this is when the congress reconvene in March 2010 to determine whether to allocate the budget as requested.
HRD (Human Resource Development) The HRD program aims at building up the competitiveness of a new generation of Thai developers. It is divided into three target groups: development of the skillset and mindset of undergraduate students which is suited to becoming embedded system professionals; intensive training for fresh graduates to achieve higher competency, in order to lighten the training burden of companies; and training of in-service professionals.
Startup Incubation Thailand has many obstacles to setting up viable startups. Therefore, in order to accelerate the development of the design industry and promote innovation, TESA will facilitate startup incubation in order to allow for pooling of resources, access to facilities and infrastructure, and guidance for strategic industrial and professional development.
Agritronics Although agriculture is the backbone of the Thai economy, productivity is low, largely due to poor management. TESA has started an initiative to develop technology to improve the capacity of agricultural producers using scientific management. This will help to increase value added in farm products and livestock. TESA will assist in using RFID in key agricultural sub-sectors to improve food safety and food security, improve culture and breeding of crops and livelihood, and apply automation in controlling the growing process.
Automotive Electronics Since the automotive industry is one of the key industries of Thailand, accounting for a substantial part of national production. Accordingly, automotive parts are also important. However, the industry is now facing major disruptive change due to the growing requirement to supply automotive parts as systemic modules, which existing manufacturers cannot provide and therefore stand to lose their competitiveness and market share. Also, the future trend of electric vehicles, which will require complete change of up to 30-50 percent of automotive parts. TESA will assist the automotive industry to adapt to this changing situation, and be ready to meet the manufacturing pipeline demand, especially for electric vehicles. This includes early-stage cooperation with automotive manufacturers, such as research in developing new automotive parts.
Energy Management In the energy and climate era, energy has become scarce and costly. Therefore, efficient energy management is critical. TESA will assist companies that produce technology to innovate energy management products in smart grid infrastructure, smart residence, smart building, and smart factory. This group, however, does not deal with alternative energy and energy source technologies.
- Logistics Technologies
Thailand has relatively high logistic cost among its competitors, due in part to overheads from high social cost in customs clearing, the poor national rail system, and efficiency management. Technology can help to improve logistics. TESA plans to develop appropriate technologies, such as RFID, Warehouse and Fleet Management System.
